Are you ready for Change?

All business owners must overcome a natural and sometimes strong resistance to change when weighing into account the necessary steps for achieving more success in business. Fear of the unknown is a powerful force that can cause business owners to default to a FIXED mindset that can prevent any business from achieving its full potential. 

Among the most widely recognized habits of successful business owners, and one which is commonly associated with a GROWTH mindset, is a willingness to consciously embrace change. In other words, to be successful, business owners must have both a desire for and willingness to change that significantly outweighs the natural human instinct to resist.   

When presented with a choice in the pursuit of better results, there are three opposing forces that collectively help people overcome resistance to change – clarity of VISION, DISSATISFACTION with current results, and a willingness to take the FIRST STEP onto the alternate path. Simply, the sum of these opposing forces must exceed the natural resistance to change before the alternative path is pursued. This concept can be described using a simple algebraic equation: 

(V x D) + FS  > R , where R is the relative resistance to change

The first of the forces that help people overcome resistance to change is [V], VISION. Successful business owners spend countless hours shaping their VISION of the future. Their VISION is inspiring and is well communicated, and the activities of the business are well aligned with the VISION towards a common result. A well-crafted VISION is a strong motivator for positive change in business. 

The second force is [D], DISSATISFACTION; a powerful motivator for change. Successful business owners are committed to excellence. They passionately pursue their vision, aspire to achieve, and are never satisfied with the status quo. They base their relative level of dissatisfaction (or satisfaction) on measured results against goals and adapt quickly to achieve their goals. People are less likely to resist change as their relative level of dissatisfaction increases.

The third force is [FS], a willingness to take the FIRST STEP onto the alternative path. Resistance to taking the first step is often rooted in fear – fear of failure, the unknown, or a loss of control. Successful business owners acknowledge their fears and weigh risk factors into account before taking the FIRST STEP onto the alternative path. Armed with good information, they are willing to invest time and money, and take calculated risks.

These factors – clarity of VISION, DISSATISFACTION with current results, and a willingness to take the FIRST STEP onto the alternate path – combine to form a powerful enabling force that help business owners overcome resistance and maintain a GROWTH mindset. You must consciously choose to resist change, and have a business driven by scarcity or, overcome resistance and fears, and be driven by the desire for better results and a life of abundance.
